UCEED: for the logical-creative mix
UCEED suits students who enjoy puzzles, spatial reasoning and problem solving as much as drawing. Part A is heavily about visualisation and reasoning; Part B tests drawing and design aptitude. IIT design programmes are strong in interaction design, product design and communication design.

NID DAT: for creative thinkers and makers
NID is India's oldest and most respected design school. The DAT Prelims tests observation, creativity, drawing and awareness; the Mains is a studio test where you make things with your hands. NID offers a huge range of disciplines — from animation and graphic design to furniture, ceramics and textiles.

NIFT: for fashion and lifestyle lovers
NIFT is the place for fashion, textile, accessory and lifestyle design. The GAT checks general ability; the CAT tests creativity and drawing; shortlisted students take a hands-on Situation Test.

Which one is the hardest?
None is "easiest". The competition is intense for all three because seats are limited. What matters more is fit:
- Strong in maths and reasoning? You'll likely find UCEED Part A comfortable.
- Love making things, observing people and generating ideas? NID rewards that.
- Passionate about fashion, styling and trends? NIFT will feel natural.
Should you take all three?
For most serious aspirants, yes. The core skills — drawing, observation, creative thinking and visual communication — help in every exam. Taking all three increases your chances, and the exams fall at different times, so you can manage them with planning.
Many students also take MIT-DAT and other private university exams as backup options. See design courses after 12th for more choices.
How to prepare for all three together
- Daily sketching — the common foundation for every exam
- Spatial reasoning practice — essential for UCEED, useful for NID
- Creative theme questions — essential for NID and NIFT
- General awareness — read the news, follow design and culture
- Hands-on model-making — for NID Mains and the NIFT Situation Test
- Mock tests for each exam — formats are different, so practise each
