NID DAT — frequently asked questions

When is NID DAT 2027?

The NID DAT 2027 Prelims for B.Des and M.Des is on Sunday, 20 December 2026. Applications close on 30 November 2026 at admissions.nid.edu. NID announces the Mains dates later.

What is tested in the NID DAT Prelims?

The Prelims is a pen-and-paper test with objective and drawing or design questions. It checks observation, drawing, creative thinking, visual communication, general awareness and reasoning. The Prelims score is used only to shortlist candidates for the Mains.

What happens in the NID DAT Mains?

Shortlisted B.Des candidates take a studio test, where they work with materials and solve hands-on design problems. Practising model-making before the Prelims result makes a big difference.

Can commerce or arts students apply to NID?

Yes. NID B.Des is open to students from any stream who have passed or are appearing for Class 12, subject to the age limit in the official admissions handbook.

How does The Design Habitat prepare students for NID?

Daily sketching and observation practice, creative and design-thinking exercises, timed mock tests with personal feedback, and studio-test practice with real materials. Choose Design Launchpad (2 years), Design Dojo (1 year) or the Crash Course depending on how much time you have.

Where can I take an NID DAT mock test?

The Design Habitat runs online NID DAT mock tests for B.Des and M.Des at thedesignhabitat.com/mock-tests, based on NID's latest sample papers. Objective questions are marked instantly and mentors review your drawings. Mock 1 is free.
