AI and Design: What Students Need to Know Before Choosing a Design Career

Will AI replace designers? How are tools like image generators changing design work and design education? A clear-eyed look for students and parents planning a design career.

AI tools can now generate images, layouts, logos and even app screens in seconds. Naturally, students and parents ask: is design still a good career if AI can design?

The short answer: AI is changing how designers work, but it's increasing the value of good design thinking. Here's why.

What AI can do well

  • Generate many visual variations quickly
  • Create mock-ups and placeholder images
  • Speed up repetitive tasks (resizing, formatting, background removal)
  • Suggest layouts and colour palettes
  • Help write first drafts of text

What AI can't do (and designers can)

  • Understand real people. AI doesn't sit with a farmer, a patient or a first-time smartphone user to understand their problem.
  • Define the right problem. Most bad products solve the wrong problem beautifully.
  • Make judgement calls. Which idea is right for these users, this budget, this culture?
  • Take responsibility. Designers are accountable for safety, ethics, accessibility and impact.
  • Work with materials and the physical world — products, spaces, fabrics, models.

These are exactly the skills design schools focus on — and that entrance exams test through observation, design thinking and studio work.

How design work is changing

Designers increasingly direct and edit AI output instead of producing every pixel by hand. That means:

  • Strong taste and judgement matter more
  • Research and problem framing matter more
  • Communication — explaining decisions to teams and clients — matters more
  • Pure production work (simple banners, basic edits) is shrinking

What this means for students

  1. Build fundamentals first. Drawing, observation, colour and composition train your eye — the eye that judges AI output.
  2. Learn to think, not just make. Practise identifying problems and explaining your ideas.
  3. Be curious about tools. Try AI tools, but don't let them replace your own sketching and thinking while you're learning.
  4. Choose fields with human depth. UX, product, service, strategy and design research are growing.

AI in design entrance exams

Entrance exams are pen-and-paper or controlled computer tests. AI can't help you in the exam hall — your own observation, drawing and thinking are what count.
